California State University, Chico, or CSU Chico for short, is a public university located in Chico, which is the most populated city in Butte County, in the US state of California, having a population estimated at a number of more than 87 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census. According to the Seal of the City of Chico, CA, the city's official nickname is ''City of Roses''. Chico has been designated as a Tree City USA for 23 years by the Arbor Day Foundation.
CSU Chico's history traces its roots back in March, 1887, when a legislative act was enacted to create the Northern Branch State Normal School of California, less than one month later, Chico being chosen as the site where the university would be constructed. One year later, in July, the first cornerstone was laid. The institution adopted its current name in 1972, as a result of legislation passed in 1971, and since then, it has continuously grown, having today an enrollment approximated at a number of more than 17 000 students, to whom the university offers more than 150 undergraduate degrees, in various fields of study.
Athletics
The athletic teams from CSU Chico are known as the Chico State Wildcats, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports for men and women, among which there are: baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, cross country and track and field. Until 1976, the university also competed in men's swimming and diving, in which the Wildcats won 3 NCAA Division II national championships, in '73, '74 and '76, but the program was eliminated several years after they won the 1976 national championship season.
